AP Physics 1

What Students Learn

Using algebra and trigonometry, students study motion and explain phenomena through Newton's laws and conservation principles. Force diagrams and motion graphs support modeling, while experimental analysis of variables and uncertainty develops understanding of mechanics and fluids.

Course Units

The units and learning focuses below follow the official AP course framework.

Unit 1: Kinematics

Unit 2: Force and translational dynamics

Unit 3: Work, energy, and power

Unit 4: Linear momentum

Unit 5: Torque and rotational dynamics

Unit 6: Energy and momentum of rotating systems

Unit 7: Oscillations

Unit 8: Fluids

AP Assessment

The AP exam includes 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes, worth 50%, and four free-response questions in 95 minutes, worth 50%. Written tasks assess mathematical routines, translation between representations, experimental design and analysis, and connections between qualitative explanations and quantitative reasoning. Students apply physical principles and explain derivations and experimental evidence.
