AP Research

What Students Learn

Building on AP Seminar, students complete a yearlong independent investigation. They identify a research question and a gap in the literature, choose an appropriate method, and follow research ethics. Evidence and methodological reflection support conclusions that address the significance and limitations of the investigation.

Core Learning Themes

1. Formulate and explore a research question

2. Understand and analyze relevant literature

3. Evaluate multiple perspectives

4. Synthesize evidence and develop conclusions

5. Collaboration and presentation of research

AP Assessment

The AP score comes entirely from the research project: a 4,000–5,000-word academic paper accounts for 75%, and a presentation with oral defense accounts for 25%. The presentation and defense take 15–20 minutes in total. Assessment considers the clarity of the question and suitability of the method, alongside the connection between evidence and conclusions and the explanation of contributions and limitations.
