Humanities 1

What Students Learn

This course establishes foundations for reading and analysis in the humanities and social sciences. Thematic sources explore connections between societies and cultures, while comparison of perspectives and attention to context develop explanations supported by evidence through discussion and short analytical writing.

Learning Focus

1. Contextual reading: identify circumstances and central information

2. Source analysis: compare perspectives and evidence

3. Connections and change: explain relationships between phenomena

4. Introduction to argument: organize evidence in analytical communication

Learning Outcomes

Students develop methods for reading and comparing sources and connecting claims with evidence. Understanding of the humanities and independent inquiry provide a foundation for more advanced reading and academic writing in subsequent courses.
