English Reading and Writing
What Students Learn
English Reading and Writing introduces the foundations of academic writing in English. Students analyze texts to understand authors' claims and arguments, then learn to structure paragraphs using PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, and Link. They state a claim, provide supporting evidence, explain how that evidence supports the claim, and connect the paragraph to its main idea or the essay's argument. The course also introduces quotation, alongside paraphrasing and summarizing, helping students use sources accurately and acknowledge them appropriately.
Key Topics
Reading and analysis: identify main ideas, follow an argument, and evaluate how evidence supports a claim.
PEEL paragraphs: select evidence for a clear claim and develop a coherent argument through explanation and connections.
Academic citation: distinguish quotation from paraphrasing, practice basic in-text citations and reference entries, and uphold academic integrity.
Revision: review the clarity of arguments and the relevance of evidence, then improve organization and expression.
