Genome Decoding

This course is a "high quality elective course" with entry requirements.

What Students Learn

This course explores how genetic information is stored and expressed, introducing the concepts of genes and genomes. Students examine biological sources and data examples to investigate relationships between genetic variation and traits. They learn to explain research conclusions using evidence.

Learning Focus

1. Genetic information: understand the relationship between DNA and genes, including the transmission and expression of genetic information.

2. Variation and traits: investigate relationships between genetic differences and traits, considering environmental influences.

3. Sources and data: read material about genetic research and compare data with the evidence used to interpret it.

4. Applications and ethics: discuss applications of genetic research, including genetic privacy and responsible use of information.

Learning Outcomes

Students use foundational genetics concepts to explain phenomena in biological sources and distinguish observations from research inferences. Reading and discussion develop their ability to analyze evidence and understand the limits of genetic applications.

Enrollment Information

The course is open to high school students and meets on Fridays, with approximately 20 places. Selection is through a written exam.
