International Mathematical Modeling Contest Team
This course is a "high quality elective course" with entry requirements.
What Students Learn
This course develops mathematical models for problems drawn from real situations. Working in teams, students define a problem and its assumptions, then use data analysis and computation to compare possible solutions. They explain their reasoning and conclusions in a modeling report.
Learning Focus
1. Problem analysis: define the objective and identify relevant factors. State reasonable assumptions.
2. Model development: select mathematical methods and express the problem through variables and relationships.
3. Computation and evaluation: use data and calculations to examine model performance. Discuss the limitations of assumptions and results.
4. Reports and collaboration: share research responsibilities and explain the basis of the model. Refine the report through discussion.
Learning Outcomes
Students develop mathematical models for practical problems and explain the conditions under which their conclusions hold. Collaborative research and report writing develop their ability to apply mathematics and communicate an argument.
Enrollment Information
The course is open to high school students and meets on Wednesdays, with up to 30 places. Selection is through a written exam.
