Musical

This course is a "high quality elective course" with entry requirements.

What Students Learn

This course combines musical theatre singing with stage expression, helping students interpret songs through vocal performance and an understanding of character. Each semester, the full class rehearses and sings one ensemble piece. Students also rehearse and sing one additional piece in pairs or small groups.

Learning Focus

1. Vocal fundamentals: practice breathing and vocal production, with attention to pitch and rhythm.

2. Character and lyrics: understand the situation and relationships within a song. Express a character's emotions and intentions through singing.

3. Ensemble rehearsal: work together on the semester's class piece and coordinate voices within the full performance.

4. Paired and small-group singing: rehearse the semester's additional piece with partners. Develop interaction and stage expression.

Learning Outcomes

Rehearsing ensemble and small-group pieces develops vocal expression and responsibility within a performance. Repeated practice helps students refine musical interpretation and understand how their singing contributes to the full presentation.

Enrollment Information

The course is open to high school and middle school students and meets on Mondays, with fewer than 20 places. Selection requires a recorded singing video.
